More lawns in Jefferson County are hurt by watering habits than by drought. Not because people water too little, but because they water a little bit every day, which trains roots to stay near the surface where they cannot survive a hot dry week. The fix is simple to describe and takes some discipline to follow: water deeply, and only when the lawn asks for it.
The number to work from
An established warm-season lawn here generally wants about half to three-quarters of an inch of water per application, delivered when the grass shows it needs it rather than on a fixed daily schedule. Depending on the season and rainfall, that might be once a week, twice a week in a hot dry stretch, or not at all for weeks during our rainy season.
The goal of that volume is to wet the soil down into the root zone, roughly six inches on a healthy lawn. A shallow daily sprinkle wets the top inch, evaporates by mid-morning, and teaches roots there is no reason to go deeper.
Measure it, do not guess
You cannot eyeball a half inch of water. Set several straight-sided containers around the zone you are testing, tuna cans work perfectly, run the system as you normally would, and measure what collects. Now you know how long your system takes to put down a half inch, and you know whether your coverage is even.
Most people are surprised twice: by how long it takes, and by how uneven the distribution is. If one can has twice what another has, no watering schedule will fix that, the heads need adjusting.
How to know when the lawn needs it
Warm-season grass tells you before it is in trouble. Watch for three signs:
- Footprints stay. Walk across the lawn and look back. If your tracks remain visible instead of springing back, the grass has lost turgor and is asking for water.
- Color shifts. The green goes dull and takes on a bluish or gray cast before it ever browns.
- Blades fold. Leaf blades fold lengthwise to reduce the surface losing moisture.
When you see those signs, water thoroughly. Then wait for them again. That cycle is what builds a deep root system, and a deep root system is what carries a lawn through a dry May.
Water early
Between roughly 4 and 9 in the morning is the right window. Wind is low, evaporation is minimal, and the blades dry as the sun comes up. Watering in the evening leaves the canopy wet all night, and in our humidity that is an open invitation to brown patch, large patch and gray leaf spot. Midday watering wastes a good share of the water to evaporation before it reaches the soil.
Adjust for your soil
Big Bend soils vary more than people expect over short distances. Sandy soil, common down toward the Wacissa and in the river-bottom areas, drains fast and holds little. Those lawns may need water more often, though still deeply, and they respond well to organic matter worked in over time. Heavier clay-influenced soils in the Red Hills hold moisture longer and can take a second-guessing eye, because they look dry on top while still holding water below.
If water runs off before it soaks in, split the cycle. Run for a period, stop, let it absorb, run again. Most controllers can do this, and it makes a big difference on slopes and compacted ground.
Grass type differences
Centipede is relatively drought-tolerant but has a shallow root system, so it shows stress before some grasses do. It also does not like wet feet. Deep and infrequent suits it well.
St. Augustine is the thirstiest of our common lawns, especially in full sun, and it is the one most likely to need attention in a dry June.
Bermuda and zoysia are the most drought-tolerant. They will go off-color in a dry spell and bounce back when the rain returns.
Turn the system off when it rains
This is the most common waste we see. Irrigation running on a timer through a week of afternoon thunderstorms does two bad things at once: it wastes water, and it keeps the canopy and soil constantly wet, which is exactly the condition our summer fungal diseases need. A working rain sensor is inexpensive and pays for itself. Check that yours actually functions, because plenty of them fail quietly.
New sod and new seed are different
Everything above applies to established turf. Freshly laid sod needs frequent light watering to keep the roots from drying while they knit in, then a gradual transition over several weeks toward the deep and infrequent pattern. Do not apply established-lawn advice to a lawn that was on a pallet last week.
