What to Look For When Hiring a Lawn Care Company

·3 min read·Williams Total Lawn Care

Lawn care is an easy business to enter and a hard one to do well. Anyone with a truck and a mower can quote your yard, and the price they give you tells you almost nothing about whether your lawn will look better in a year. Here is what we would look at if we were hiring someone.

Insurance is the non-negotiable

Ask for proof of liability insurance, and ask that it come from the agent rather than as a forwarded PDF. Mowing equipment throws objects. A rock through a window is a minor incident. A rock through a windshield on the road, or an injury on your property with no coverage behind it, is your problem if the company is uninsured.

Ask about workers compensation coverage for the crew as well. An injured worker on your property with no coverage is a situation nobody wants to be in.

Ask what the price actually includes

This is where most disappointment starts. Mowing, edging, trimming and blowing off hard surfaces are four separate operations, and not every quote includes all four. Get it in writing:

A company that answers these clearly and specifically is telling you something about how they run everything else.

Look at the equipment

You can tell a lot from a trailer. Clean, maintained equipment usually means sharp blades and correct deck heights, which is most of what determines whether your lawn looks good. Neglected equipment means dull blades tearing your grass, and it means breakdowns that turn into missed visits.

Ask how often they sharpen blades. Anyone doing this seriously will have an immediate answer.

Ask whether they know your grass

This is the question that separates crews around here. Centipede is the dominant home lawn grass across Jefferson County, and it wants very different treatment from St. Augustine or bermuda. It is cut lower, it wants far less nitrogen, and it is easily damaged by the standard treat-everything-the-same approach.

Ask what height they will cut your lawn at and why. If the answer is a specific number tied to your grass type, good. If the answer is whatever the deck is set at, that is your answer too.

Understand who is doing chemical applications

Applying fertilizer and pesticides commercially in Florida is a regulated activity, and it should be handled by someone properly licensed for it. If a company offers weed and pest treatments, ask who performs them and under what license. Plenty of good mowing companies do not do chemical work at all, and there is nothing wrong with that. What matters is that it is clear and correct.

Communication is the real differentiator

Over a season, the thing that determines whether you are happy is not usually the quality of a single cut. It is whether the company answers the phone, shows up when they said, tells you when weather pushes the schedule, and lets you know when they notice something wrong in the yard.

A crew that flags an insect problem or a failing sprinkler head before it becomes a dead patch is worth considerably more than one that quietly mows around it.

Red flags

About that lowest price

A crew charging well under everyone else has to make it up somewhere. Usually that means less time on the property, which means faster mowing with a dull blade, no real edging, and nothing blown off. You end up with a lawn that gets shorter every week without ever looking cared for, and often with turf damage that costs more to fix than you saved.

Ask about local references

Ask whether they work in your area regularly and whether any nearby properties are theirs. Drive by and look. That tells you more than any sales conversation, and it is the easiest verification available in a community this size.

We are happy to answer all of the above about ourselves, and to walk your property before quoting rather than pricing it sight unseen. Give us a call and we will come take a look.
