The mature live oaks and pecans through Jefferson County are worth keeping, and the grass under them is fighting a contest it cannot win with fertilizer.
Two problems at once
Light. Turf needs a genuine minimum of direct or filtered sun, and under dense canopy it is below that. No product supplies light.
Roots. A mature tree's feeder roots occupy the same top few inches of soil as the turf roots, and the tree is larger, older and better established. Water and nutrients applied to that area go to the tree first.
What actually helps
- Thin the canopy. Proper crown thinning by somebody who knows what they are doing lets filtered light through without harming the tree. This is the only intervention that changes the real constraint.
- Raise the mowing height in shaded areas. Every bit of leaf area matters when light is short.
- Reduce nitrogen rather than increasing it. Shaded grass cannot use heavy feeding and soft growth invites disease.
- Water less frequently in shade. Shaded ground dries slowly, and running the same schedule as the sunny part keeps it permanently damp.
- Keep traffic off. Shaded turf has no capacity to recover from wear.
Mulched rings
A mulched ring at the base of a tree does three useful things: it removes the mower and trimmer from the trunk, it eliminates the turf competition immediately around the root flare, and it looks deliberate.
Two to three inches deep, pulled back from the trunk so the root flare is visible. A mulch volcano piled against a trunk causes decay at the root collar and is the most common mulching error there is.
When to stop trying
If an area has failed with a good program, a raised cut and a correct water schedule, it is not going to succeed with a better product. A bed with shade-tolerant planting costs less to maintain, uses less water, looks intentional and is better for the tree.
That is a better outcome than an annual cycle of patching turf that will not hold.
