Soils change quickly around here. Out toward Waukeenah and through the Red Hills the ground is heavier clay; down toward Wacissa and the river bottoms it turns sandy. Those two want opposite management, and treating them the same is why programs that work on one property fail on the next.
What clay does well
Clay holds water and it holds nutrients. A fertilizer application on clay stays available to the plant far longer than the same application on sand, where it leaches through. That means less frequent feeding at reasonable rates rather than the light-and-often approach sandy ground needs.
It also means a lawn on clay survives a dry stretch considerably better, because there is a moisture reserve in the root zone.
What clay does badly
- It compacts. Clay particles are fine and flat, and pressure presses them together, removing the pore space roots need for air. Vehicle traffic, foot traffic and even mowing the same lines every week contribute.
- It drains slowly. After a heavy summer storm, water sits. Turf sitting in saturated soil suffocates, and roots die from the bottom while the top still looks green.
- It shrinks and swells. Clay moves with moisture, which stresses anything rooted in it and opens cracks in dry spells.
- It is easy to damage when wet. Driving or even walking heavily on saturated clay compacts it far more than the same traffic would when dry.
What to do differently on clay
- Water less often and for longer. Clay takes water slowly, so a long single run produces runoff. Split the run into two or three shorter cycles with gaps, which gets far more water into the ground for the same minutes.
- Aerate on a schedule. Core aeration is more valuable on clay than on sand because compaction is the limiting factor rather than nutrient holding.
- Topdress with compost after aerating. Organic matter worked into clay improves structure over time in a way nothing else does.
- Keep equipment off it when saturated.
- Deal with low spots properly rather than hoping. Clay will not drain them on its own.
The sandy side of the county
Down toward the Aucilla and the Wacissa the ground is sand, and the answers reverse. Water moves through fast, nutrients leach, and drought stress comes on quickly. There the approach is lighter and more frequent fertilization, deeper watering to train roots down, and organic matter added to improve holding rather than structure.
A soil test through your county extension office tells you which situation you are actually in, and on a large property it may be both.
