Rain Sensors, Controllers, and Not Watering During a Thunderstorm

Drive around Monticello during a summer downpour and you will see at least one system running. It is a small thing that signals a larger one: that system has been running on the same schedule since it was installed, through wet weeks and dry ones, and that lawn is almost certainly dealing with disease as a result.

Why constant watering causes disease

Our main summer lawn diseases, brown patch and gray leaf spot on St. Augustine, large patch on centipede and zoysia, all require extended leaf wetness to establish. In a North Florida August, the weather already provides plenty of that. An irrigation system adding to it on a fixed timer removes the daily drying period the lawn needs.

This is why we say turning the system off during a rainy stretch does more for a lawn than most products. It is free, and it works.

Rain sensors fail silently

Most systems have one. Many of them stopped working years ago and nobody noticed, because a failed rain sensor produces no error, it just stops interrupting the schedule.

Test yours. The common expanding-disk type can usually be triggered by hand: activate it and confirm the controller shows the system as suspended, or start a cycle and confirm it does not run. Wireless sensors also have batteries, and those die.

While you are at it, check where it is mounted. A sensor under an eave or beneath a tree canopy never gets wet during a rain and therefore never triggers. It needs open sky.

What a smart controller actually does

Weather-based controllers adjust run times using local weather data or on-site sensors rather than running a fixed program. Instead of watering the same amount every Tuesday and Friday all year, the system waters based on what the weather has actually done.

In a climate like ours, where a dry May can be followed by a soaking July, that is genuinely useful. The main things to look for are the ability to control each zone independently, real rain and freeze response, and a way to adjust things without a manual.

What a smart controller cannot do is fix bad coverage. If your heads are misaimed or spaced too far apart, no amount of scheduling intelligence will fix the dry rings between them. Get the hardware right first.

If you keep a basic controller, use seasonal adjust

Nearly every conventional controller has a seasonal adjustment or water budget percentage. Set your peak-summer program correctly, then dial the percentage down for spring and fall rather than rebuilding the schedule four times a year.

At minimum, change the program with the seasons. What a lawn needs in a hot dry May is not what it needs in a stormy August or a dormant January.

Turn it off for winter

Warm-season grass goes dormant here. It is not growing, and it does not need irrigation. Running a system through a North Florida winter wastes water and can contribute to disease and to winter weed germination.

Shut it down and check it again in spring. Do not forget the freeze consideration either, since we do get hard freezes: water on hard surfaces overnight in a freeze creates ice, and many controllers can be set to hold during freezing conditions.

Program it the right shape

Two principles matter more than the exact numbers.

Water early. Between roughly 4 and 9 in the morning. Wind and evaporation are low and the blades dry as the sun comes up. Evening watering is the worst option available in our humidity.

Water deeply and infrequently. Fewer, longer applications that wet the root zone, rather than a short cycle every day. Daily shallow watering builds shallow roots and a lawn that cannot handle a dry week.

If water runs off before it soaks in, on a slope or on compacted ground, use cycle-and-soak: split the run time into shorter cycles with soak periods between. Most controllers support this and it makes a real difference.

Know your actual numbers

Do a catch-can test. Set straight-sided containers around a zone, run it fifteen minutes, and measure. Now you know how long it takes to apply half an inch, and you know whether coverage is even. Every schedule you set after that is based on measurement rather than guessing.

The habit that matters most

Whatever equipment you have, the highest-value habit is looking at the lawn and the forecast, and turning the system off when the weather is doing the work. Everything else is refinement on top of that.
