On the large properties around Lamont, Waukeenah and up toward Pinetta, the thing that separates a place that looks cared for from one that does not is rarely the condition of the grass. It is whether there is a line.
Why the edge does the work
The eye reads boundaries. A crisp line where maintained turf meets everything else tells you somebody is looking after the place, even if the turf inside that line is ordinary. A gradual fade from lawn into brush reads as neglect, even if the mown part is immaculate.
That is why on an acreage property the highest-value hour is almost always spent on edges rather than on the middle.
Where the lines go
- Along both sides of the drive, its full length. A long drive with a defined edge is the strongest first impression a rural property has.
- Around the house, outbuildings and any hardscape.
- Along fence lines, which is where a property visibly gets away first.
- Around trees, so the mower is not scarring trunks and the tree has a mulched ring rather than turf competing at its base.
- At the transition to rough ground, held in the same place every time so it reads as deliberate.
Holding the line
An edge is only an edge if it stays where it was. Cutting a new line every visit produces a wandering, soft boundary that never reads properly.
The way to hold it is to establish it once, mark it if necessary, and cut the same line every time. On a long drive that means the mower runs the same track, which incidentally also avoids the ruts that come from varying it on soft ground.
Trees along a drive
String trimmers do enormous cumulative damage to young trees. Repeated trimmer strikes girdle bark at the base and kill trees slowly enough that nobody connects the two.
A mulched ring around each tree solves it completely, keeps the mower away, and looks better. Keep the mulch off the trunk itself at two to three inches deep.
Timing on a schedule
Edging every visit costs a little each time. Reclaiming an edge that has been left for a season costs considerably more and looks worse in the meantime. Like most of what we do out here, the scheduled version is the cheap version.
